Our Sunbeds - gentler and more effective than ever!

Since 0.3 tanning regulations were introduced in 2009, Cosmedico, Germany's world-leading producer of luxury tanning lamps and our one-and-only choice, has continued to develop its lamp composition to ensure gentle, effective, long-lasting tanning with significantly lower risks of over-exposure or burning.

When 0.3 became mandatory most sunbeds in the UK had to lengthen session times by 2-4 minutes. However, as our units have 60-lamps (instead of the usual 40) and have always been fitted with Cosmedico's most advanced lamps our session times have never gone up and remain at 6, 8, 10 or 12 minutes.

Our latest and most-innovative configuration combines 40 x Cosmedico 10K/100 lamps and 20 x Cosmedico Rubino UV & Red Light tanning lamps.

Cosmedico 10K/100 lamps are reputed amongst the best on the market right now and the additional red-light generated by the Rubinos boosts tan-inducing oxygen levels in the skin and improves direct pigmentation by up to 50%. Infra-red light is also associated with creating smoother skin; promoting a sense of well-being and can even help reduce aches and pains!

What's the difference between high & low pressure Sunbeds?

High Pressure sunbeds offer far more effective and superior tanning results than traditional tanning beds, producing a more even tan from head to toe with fewer sessions needed both to develop and maintain a tan. 'High Pressure' merely refers to the atmospheric pressure inside the bulb which differentiates from standard fluorescent tubes which have low atmospheric pressure.

Why haven't I heard of it before?

High Pressure technology has been around for almost as long as fluorescent UV tubes but tends to be restricted to the facial zone of most new sunbeds (more effective for the face) and very few sunbeds are exclusively High Pressure, like our Ergoline Open-Sun 1050 (image right). There's one very simple reason for that and it's purely down to cost. High Pressure beds are extremely expensive to buy and to operate and they have to be assembled by a team of engineers in-situ. These beds are typically 4-7 times more expensive than a traditional sunbed but they're so much better for regular tanners we consider our Open-Sun 1050 a worthwhile investment!

How will I know if it's a high pressure Sunbed?

High Pressure sunbeds look completely different. They consist of around 30 large round UV lamps, like giant versions of GU10 spotlights (the kind we see fitted in many kitchens and bathrooms). Of course, their make up is completely different and each lamp emits powerful levels of UV light which is filtered by a mirrored-glass panel designed to reduce UVB (burning rays) to less than 0.5% and allow through more of the light-spectrum that deepens brown pigment.

UVA tanning has another benefits too:
  • doesn't thicken or age the skin.
  • doesn't dry out the skin or increase normal renewal rate of 28 days - so tan stays much longer.
  • fewer sessions needed - as few as 1 every 10 days to maintain a tan which makes it cheaper in the long run.

How long will I need?

Our sessions range from 6-12 minutes, going up in 2 minute increments. For those who tan easily 3 x 8-10 minute sessions is usually enough to develop colour on the Open-Sun and for those who tan less readily we recommend 3 x 6 minute sessions on our traditional units before switching to the high pressure bed - which is at its best when some melanin is already present - and then having 3 additional sessions of 6 to 8 minutes on the Open Sun too. At least 48 hours should be left between sessions and 2 sessions per week, while developing colour, is usually sufficient.

Low Pressure Sunbeds and 0.3

Since our government introduced 0.3 tanning regulations in 2009, Cosmedico, Germany's world-leading producer of luxury tanning lamps and our one-and-only choice, has continued to develop its lamp composition to ensure gentle, effective, long-lasting tanning with significantly lower risks of over-exposure or burning.

Burning is not only thought to increase the risk of developing melanoma (skin cancer) but it also reduces the life of a tan because of the drying and increased-shedding effect on the skin’s outer layers.

When 0.3 became mandatory most sunbeds in the UK had to lengthen session times by 2-4 minutes. However, as our units have 60-lamps (instead of the usual 40) and have always been fitted with Cosmedico's most advanced lamps our session times have never increased and still remain at 6, 8, 10 or 12 minutes.

Our latest and most-innovative configuration combines 40 x Cosmedico 10K/100 lamps and 20 x Cosmedico Rubino UV & Red Light tanning lamps.

Cosmedico 10K/100 lamps are reputed amongst the best on the market right now and the additional red-light generated by the Rubinos boosts tan-inducing oxygen levels in the skin and improves direct pigmentation by up to 50%!

Infra-red light is also associated with creating smoother skin; promoting a sense of well-being and can even help reduce aches and pains.

How Harmful is UVB?

UVB rays are also referred to as 'burning' rays and when skin is exposed to UVB it immediately starts building up protection by forming a natural filter or barrier recognised as 'tan'.

The level of protection, or depth of tan, skin develops depends on the amount of melanin pigment present in the first place and very pale skins (classified as Group 1) may have little or no melanin pigment at all. This skin group should be extremely cautious when considering outdoor sun exposure and should not use indoor tanning beds at all.

Experts agree controlled sun exposure is vital to good health - because Vitamin D is naturally produced in response. All skins groups should monitor their individual reaction to UV and protect from burning as soon as any signs of pinkness start to appear.

People with darker skins need much greater exposure to activate Vitamin D production and, therefore, it is very important that everyone learns their own tolerance level and adjusts exposure according to skin group, climate and location.

Allowing the skin to burn can have long term consequences aside from initial redness, soreness or swelling. Cellular damage may also occur which can lead to melanoma (skin cancer) later in life, often many years after the damage was inflicted. Too little sunlight, however, may cause us to become Vitamin D deficient - and that can have serious health consequences too.

Why do we need Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is credited with having many major health benefits like boosting the immune system, increasing bone density, and fighting off conditions such as heart disease; depression; multiple sclerosis; diabetes; breast/prostate/colon cancers; Alzheimer’s
and a whole host of other conditions.

On a healthy, balanced diet it is possible to acquire around 10% of our daily Vitamin D requirement from food sources such as oily fish, egg yolk, mushrooms, and cheese, and some from foods like milk and breakfast cereals fortified with Vitamin D. The remaining 90% can easily be obtained from minimal sun exposure. During spring and summer months 10-20 minutes unprotected sun exposure, 2 to 3 times a week is enough to create sufficient Vitamin D to last through to mid-winter.

From October-March (almost half of the year) the sun's wavelength within the UK is not long enough to stimulate Vitamin D production, and by January many people find their levels depleted enough to cause health issues. More and more people are being tested for deficiency and prescribed oral supplements by their doctors. Prescribed doses should never be exceeded as oral supplements can lead to a build-up having equally adverse effects.

Research shows that it is impossible to get too much Vitamin D from sun exposure because sunlight also regulates levels naturally by harmlessly destroying any excess present within the skin!

Sunbeds and Skin Cancer

Some health experts advise against the use of tanning equipment and we encourage all customers do some research and consider the arguments before going ahead. Increasingly there are also experts who recognise the useful role tanning equipment can play when it's used properly.

It is neither Salon 2000's role, nor intention, to sway customers one way or the other. We merely aim to provide a professional establishment that offers well-maintained tanning equipment and operates carefully within recommended guidelines.

Salon 2000 is regulated by the City of Sunderland.
