Massage Treatments & Benefits
Relaxation
Massage is one of the most effective ways to rid the body of unhealthy stresses and tensions - especially those lingering on in our muscles when our minds have already moved on!
Massage is proven to benefit us in so many ways:
Treatment aims vary from person to person and so do massage techniques. People looking to ease sore, tired muscles may benefit from Swedish Massage; others seeking escapism and relaxation may find fragrant essential oils used in Aromatherapy Massage help them relax more deeply, others may benefit from the soothing warmth of Hot Stones Massage to help soften tight muscles.
All treatments begin with the application of superior quality oils which facilitate easy, flowing strokes across the skin without any dragging or friction.
Basic Techniques:

All treatments begin with the application of superior quality oils which facilitate easy, flowing strokes across the skin without any dragging or friction.
Basic Techniques:
- Superficial Effleurage treatment begins and ends with this technique which involves light-weight, gentle hand-over-hand stroking movements that warm skin and muscle tissue as well as promoting a feeling of soothing relaxation. Working in the direction of blood flow, Effleurage gives a gentle boost to both circulatory and lymphatic systems
- Deep Effleurage strokes are usually interspersed with Superficial ones to help stretch and flatten the muscles, increase blood and oxygen supply and improve overall tone and condition
- Petrissage involves the firm kneading of large muscles in the calves, thighs, upper arms and shoulders. Some people find this uncomfortable but it can be effective at loosening & softening tense, aching muscles
- Friction massage is used when a ‘knot’ or ‘adhesion’ is located within a muscle. Knots are treated by applying firm pressure using finger tips and thumbs to break down the knot and try to separate the muscle fibres. Sometimes they’re barely noticeable and ‘pop’ easily, sometimes they can be deeper and more persistent. (Knotted muscles can be indicative of injury, poor posture, too much daily stress, or could have an underlying musculoskeletal cause worthy of investigation.) Knots can be painful - restricting movement and impairing the ability to sleep - in this case they may take more than one treatment to disperse and can result in mild tenderness for a day or two of manipulation
- Percussion massage is not often used during a spa massage. Most people recognise it as a chopping movement using the sides of the hands, and it involves applying sharp (though not painful) blows to certain muscles. Alternatively, rapid and repeated tapping with fingertips is another Percussion Massage technique which is usually employed on the face, neck and shoulders
Sports Massage
Sports Massage is a form of therapeutic treatment requiring specialist knowledge on the part of its practitioner and, in order to legally practice within the UK, they must hold a recognised Level 3 qualification and certificate.
Unlike other forms of spa massage - which tend to focus on relaxation and psychological well-being - Sports Massage seeks to treat and prevent sports-related injuries; aid recovery after exercise; and improve overall physical performance. It is used by almost every major athlete throughout the world, but is also commonly recommended by personal trainers seeking to improve the overall health and fitness levels of their non-sporting clients.
Qualified Sports Massages practitioners in the UK must acquire:

Qualified Sports Massages practitioners in the UK must acquire:
- a thorough understanding of the form and function of human anatomy and physiology
- the ability to recognise common sports injuries
- thorough understanding of contra-indications, i.e. when to treat, when to leave well alone, and even when to recommend medical intervention
- the ability to set out a workable treatment plan
Sports Massages largely focusses on specific soft tissue work, i.e. manipulation of:
- Fascia – the layer of connective tissue which encloses a muscle
- Muscles – bundled fibres that expand and contract to produce body movement
- Tendons – fibrous bands that attach muscle to bone
- Ligaments – fibrous bands that connect bones
- Synovial membranes – connective tissue that sheaths tendons, lines joint cavities and forms sacs of synovial fluid which cushion joints
- Blood vessels – arteries, veins and capillaries which transport nutrients and oxygenated blood throughout the body
The main effects and benefits of Sports Massage:
- increases blood flow around the body and improves the absorption rate of oxygen and other vital nutrients
- opens minute pores in tissues and disperses lactic acid/toxins which leads to much faster recovery from exercise
- stimulates lymphatic drainage which flushes toxins out of the body more rapidly
- separates muscle fibres, breaking down knots and congestion that inhibit normal function
- realigns the muscle fascia
- stretches out and strengthens connective tissues which leads to greater flexibility of movement, elasticity and suppleness
- releases tensions built up in muscles and induces stress release, which in-turn promotes better mental health
- enhances prowess and performance
- extends the longevity of physical activity or a sporting career

Reiki Healing & Massage
Chinese and Japanese medicines long ago recognised that the human body has its own vibrational energy field which, when disrupted by stress or trauma, appears to inhibit the body's natural healing processes and can lead to illnesses.
Reiki was developed in Japan as an alternative therapy which aims to unblock and rebalance vibrational energy flow. Although no-one cannot explain exactly how or why Reiki has a beneficial effect, there is a great deal of documented evidence to show that it does. So much so that it's now widely recognised and recommended by the NHS, especially for patients suffering with life-altering conditions like cancer, Parkinson's disease, mental illness, depression, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain disorders, HIV, motor neurone disease, and more. Whether its effect is entirely 'placebo' in nature, it doesn't really matter. If it helps the mind and body deal with trauma and illness then it's all to the good!
Reiki cannot do any harm and, at the very least, offers an pleasant form of relaxation. Some people will experience physical effects such as heat transfer, pain reduction, sudden release of tension in a specific area; some may be overcome by emotion, see coloured lights or even experience a floating feeling! Reiki is different for every individual and sometimes different for the same person each time they have another session.
Reiki can be adapted as a hands-on or hands-off treatment according to personal preference and sessions can be booked from 30 to 60 minutes. They can also be combined with an Aromatherapy Back Massage as yet another pleasant alternative.

Gua Sha Face & Body Massage
Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese therapy which can be used to treat most areas of the face or body to improve circulation, eliminate toxins and boost the lymphatic system. It promotes the delivery of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood directly to skin cells and muscle fibres thereby improving their overall health and condition.
Gua Sha can be experienced as a gentle and relaxing spa treatment or a more intense and firm massage aimed at breaking down muscular knots and tension. Aromatic massage oils are used to avoid dragging the skin, however, it is still normal and desirable for the skin to become slightly reddened. This will be temporary in nature and does not result in bruising.
Gua Sha has become very popular as a technique for firming and rejuvenating facial contours and can be carried out at home once familiar with the correct procedure.
